Hi, Title says it all really - i need to know how to transfer films that Ive recorded on my Freeview boxes hard-drive to my laptop hard-drive. My Freeview box is made by: DigiHome Model number: DG250DTRAO8 With a built in 250Gig hard-drive The only viable port i can see is what looks like a standard USB port under the flap on the front of the Freeview box. These usually attach to the USB port on the computer and are quite cheap. Probably not very good quality results though bearing in mind the method involves two conversions. Transfer From Astro Pvr To Computer Software Although SomeThe USB socket on the PVR may only be to update the software although some allow you to transfer recorded files to a USB device. Check the handbook. Transfer From Astro Pvr To Computer Archive To AIf you can archive to a USB stick, your computer should be able to read the file. You can just take the HDD out and plug it into your PC but I believe the data is encrypted or the HDDs use a non-standard file system in most PVRs, so this might be difficult. I have heard that some PVRs detect external HDDs plugged into their USB ports.whether you can transfer between them is another matter though. ![]() The freeview user-manual doesnt even mention the USB port at all nor is it mentioned in the on-screen setup menus Ill look at the Scart option if possible - the less techy the solution better. Yeah, if youre not comfortable with taking the hard drive out and playing around with it (only recommended if youre very good with computers), the second-best way would be to get a tuner card for your PC (they are available in many forms, but youll probably want one with a composite input, then fix up a SCART lead). Or, as has been stated, if you have a standalone DVD recorder, just connect that to the box with a SCART lead and record straight from there. Even cheaper of course would be to get a USB tuner stick for your PC to record on the computer directly rather than via the PVR. If you are really lucky the usb port will work like an sd card card in a mobile pad ie:if you connect it to a pc via cable the pc will recognise the drive and you will be able to just copy onto your PC. Otherwise you will have the fun of capturing to a TV card with the associated issues of poor quality and posible av sync issues. Many boxes use Linux based software which uses ext2 or ext3 rather than FAT 32 or NFTS as used in Windows. This is another potential problem if you simply extract the drive and attach it to the PC although patches are available to permit other operating systems to read Linux files. If the recorder USB port is intended to be used with memory sticks then it will also have a 5V DC supply on it. Connecting the two DC supplies together is not a good idea and might lead to damage to either or both bits of kit. Since the manual doesnt seem to mention USB I think it is better to err on the side of caution and avoid any risk and ignore the USB port on the recorder.
